Jenny put more wood on the blaze and settled herself beside it. She placed the can of water on a flat stone, and nudged it close enough to the flames to heat it without scorching the can. When it was warm, she lifted it gingerly and took a small drink. The acrid well-water together with the taste of tin was definitely bitter, but at least it was warm. As a cool breeze stirred, she drew closer to the fire and settled down to wait.

Jenny had no idea how much time had passed when she finally saw the pinpoints of headlights in the distance. It must have been several hours for she'd had to restock her supply of wood twice, and she was once again running low. She breathed a sigh of relief as the car ate up the miles between them like a hungry dragon with jewel-bright eyes. She must be more tired than she had thought to be so fanciful at a time like this, she mused. She rubbed her neck tiredly, then picked up her can to warm her hands on the metal.
